19 Chairs

As the world stays home, we have become more familiar with the objects that we live around. In reaction to the damage of COVID-19, 19 Chairs is a celebration of one of the most humble pieces of furniture.

Stage 1:

Using 27mm square section timber, and 40mm screws, our challenge was to design and build a chair a day throughout lockdown.

19 Chairs. Built, but bare.

Stage 2:

Each chair will be delivered to a host of inspiring artists and designers from all corners of the creative industry, who will be challenged to reinvent, reimagine or redesign their chair, in any way, shape or form, with an older person in mind. Paint it, dismantle it or photograph it, anything, the options are endless!

The newly “revamped” 19 Chairs will then be sold with all profits going towards Age UK, an amazing charity offering much-needed companionship and support to the elderly, through such difficult and lonely times. We have spoken to Age UK directly, who are both thrilled and thankful to be our chosen charity.

All 19 Chairs are art directed and photographed in the local area.

A stay at home collaboration with my brother Will Butterfield.
